Overview
The E-2 Hawkeye is an airborne early-warning aircraft small enough to operate from aircraft carriers, using a catapult to launch and a hook to land. Its rotating radar dome, 7.3 m wide, spots enemy aircraft and missiles far beyond the ship's own radar.
Originally built by Grumman, it has served the US Navy since 1964. The latest E-2D Advanced Hawkeye (figures shown) has a much more powerful radar and is also flown by Japan and France.
